Norm R129 i-Size: choose the seat by height
The regulation R129, dite i-Size classifies seats according to the child's height in centimetres. It requires rearward-facing use until at least 15 months and adds a side-impact test, which was absent from the previous standard.
Norm R44/04: choose the seat by weight
Older, the R44/04 standard works by weight groups: group 0+ up to 13 kg, group 1 from 9 to 18 kg, groups 2 and 3 from 15 to 36 kg. Both standards still coexist on the market; the orange label on the seat shows which one applies.
Rearward-facing: the most protective position
In a frontal impact, the rearward-facing position spreads the energy over the whole backrest and eases strain on the neck, whose muscles remain immature in young children. Extending it beyond the regulatory minimum is recommended as long as the seat's size allows.
Isofix or belt: two ways to fix the seat
The Isofix system anchors the seat directly to metal points in the vehicle, with a visual locking indicator that greatly reduces the risk of installation error. Fixing with a three-point seat belt remains possible in vehicles without Isofix, provided you follow the indicated routing precisely.
