How to recognise a baby with colic?
Colic shows as recurrent crying episodes in the newborn, accompanied by certain behaviours. You may notice your baby clenching their fists, drawing their legs up against their tummy, going red and having wind during the crying episode.
Do not worry, colic is not an illness; it is a behaviour that occurs in the majority of infants. There is no cause for concern as long as your baby does not have a fever, their stools are normal and they are gaining weight satisfactorily, following their growth curve.
You are probably wondering what might cause these colic episodes. No one has the exact answer; the cause remains a mystery and several hypotheses are suggested: infant formula, air swallowed during the baby bottle feed...
How to relieve your baby's colic?
Sometimes, even doing your best, nothing will truly soothe your baby with colic. Just remember that colic is temporary and affects almost all babies. Moreover, it has no harmful consequences and does not affect your child's development.
You can soothe your baby using homeopathic remedies or by performing abdominal massages clockwise, using special baby massage oils. Keep the environment very calm around them and dim the lights to help them settle.
During a colic episode, it is recommended to carry your baby in a baby carrier or a sling.
If your baby is bottle-fed, choose an anti-colic baby bottle and avoid letting them swallow air while they drink their milk. Don’t forget to help them burp.
You can also place your baby on the CloudNest anti-colic cocoon which relieves colic thanks to its natural flaxseed heat pack. It comforts the baby and aids digestion by elevating their legs. It can be used from birth.
