It is 25 May 1961, rue de Nazareth, in the heart of Paris.

On this Saint Sophie's Day, a unique toy previously dreamed up by a certain Mr Rampeau is made for the first time.

Far from the traditional shapes inspired by pets or farm animals, this future icon of the baby care world is none other than a giraffe. She is 18 centimetres tall, has 76 dark spots and gives a mischievous, now legendary "squeak". She was an instant success with parents, who saw in her an essential companion for their child.

And because babies stop crying during their first teething thanks to Sophie la Girafe, it was simply by "word of mouth" that this exotic-looking, wildly innovative toy became famous.

Adored by French families, Sophie la Girafe is also an international brand, available in more than 170 products and 4 distinct collections, and now exported to more than 85 countries.

Made from 100% natural rubber from the latex of the Hevea tree, she is the very opposite of a plastic toy. Her rubber comes exclusively from Hevea trees in Malaysia.

Every morning, before the heat of the day, a fluid milk is drawn from these millions of Hevea trees, coming from the cells just under the bark: this is "latex".

Hevea latex was first processed in 1839 thanks to vulcanisation, invented by Mr Charles Goodyear. This exceptional material is natural, flexible, waterproof, insulating and pleasant both to smell and to touch.
